MaxDB is MySQL's enterprise RDBMS offering. The history of this RDBMS is:

A Long Time Ago, in a Galaxy Far, Far Away: There was an RDBMS called AdabasD, which was somewhat archaic but had a cool Oracle7 compatibility mode.

A Few Years Ago: SAP, a consumer relations management company needed an RDBMS and were tired of letting Oracle and Sybase get lots of dollars every time they rolled out an installation, so they bought out AdabasD and branded the database as SAP/DB. They open-sourced it under the GPL license, and gave it away. Thus they were able to charge their cusomters more for the front-end software, and the customers still got a better deal in the end.

MySQL got a huge cash infusion, and they realised they could get more bold and stop using their crappy MySQL MyISAM and/or InnoDB offerings, but could actually give their customers SAP/DB and then support that! It has views. And everything. So SAP/DB let MySQL re-brand the database as MaxDB.

Now MySQL lets you download MaxDB and are planning on putting a lot of MySQL/MaxDB compatibility features into the two products.

This is a Good Thing.
