MySQL is a relatively feature-full RDBMS that includes source code via the GPL license. It is of interest because it approaches enterprise-class RDBMSs in stability and performance. It is my opinion, though, that it only approaches such, and does not attain it. See PostgreSQLvsMySQL for more details. If you're looking for some interesting/useful information about administering MySQL, check the MySQLKnowledgeRepository on this wiki. Update December 2004: There is little holding MySQL back from equalling PostgreSQL on technical features, and its weaknesses are able to be worked around. I am currently a MySQL DBA presiding over one of the largest MySQL installations in the world (top 10?), and it's kind of hard to argue with the facts. It works, and Friendster is not the only premier company that's achieved such loads with MySQL. --
